Bert & Ernie Aren’t Gay
It seems that many in the Christian right are rather upset that there has been doubt over Bert and Ernie’s straightness. It also seems that many gay rights activists are rather upset that Bert and Ernie aren’t gay because apparently children are missing a key opportunity to learn about same sex unions.
I’ll admit that this is a tough one. Scripture is clear on God’s intention for relationships between people, but he has been frustratingly silent on relationships between legless inanimate objects made of foam and plastic that rely on a hand being inserted into their flatulent end so they can move.
To those on the Christian right and to gay activists, shame on you! You both want Bert and Ernie’s relationship, however straight or gay that may be, to serve what you want! The real question to ask is this – what do Bert and Ernie’s creators want from their relationship? Only then can we know what the relationship between Bert and Ernie should really be.
Fortunately, Bert and Ernie’s creators have spoken and today they issued the following statement.
“They remain puppets and do not have a sexual orientation.”
Touché.
